«Halation Summer / Summer Night Town (English Ver.)» is Coconuts Musume‘s debut single, and their only one released in the 3" format (their later releases were all 5" releases). It was also released in Taiwan on August 12th, with a different catalogue number and with a lyrics card.

The single reached #40 on the Oricon charts, charted for two weeks and sold 9.730 copies.

Coconuts Musume were first introduced on an episode of ASAYAN (a talent show aiming to produce new music talents) on May 27th, 1999, to a baffled Morning Musume who were in the studio at the same time. Morning Musume, not happy with the competition and how mature and beuatiful they thought the coconuts girls looked, were even more shocked when Coconuts Musume debut single was announced. It was an English version of Morning Musume’s second single «Summer Night Town».
In an interview, they said «We first heard ‘Summer Night Town’ just before we started recording. It was only the second song we’d recorded, and of course we didn’t know anything about the song until we heard it.»

Halation Summer was the theme song to the anime «Kyoro-chan», and is described by music magazines as a song with Latin beat and brings up images of summer! The second A-side is descbribed as an English version of a Morning Musume song, but with a very fresh sound.

Coconuts Musume had actually debuted earlier, as they made their debut in Taiwan. They shot the music videos for «Halation Summer» and «Summer Night Town (English Ver.) while being there, as well as doing several photo shoots. They also held small concerts (at malls and such) and had hand-shake events where they signed CDs and interacted with their fans.
