«Onna, Kanashii, Otona / Inshouha Renoir no You ni / Hitoshirezu Mune wo Kanaderu Yoru no Aki» is a joint CD single released by the groups Sexy Otonajan, Elegies and Puripuri pink. It contains the title tracks and their instrumentals, but no B-side, which is rare for a H!P release. The only other old school release with no B-side is Tanpopo’s «Seinaru Kane ga Hibiku no Yoru».

A video single was also released

In the spring of 2000, Tsunku decided to shuffle all the artists he managed under Hello! Project. In 2001, 2002 and 2003 he repeated the success. In 2004 there was a twist to the shuffles, creating one huge group in winter time to commemorate H!P’s 7th anniversary. In 2005, the shuffles were back for the summer, but this year too had a twist. Instead of splitting everyone he manages into three groups, he only used 11 of the artists under his management. 2005 was the last year with shuffle groups.

Tsunku decided to have elegance as the theme this year. Elegies are Ai Takahashi, Ayumi Shibata, Reina Tanaka and Mai Satoda (who couldn’t believe she was one of the 11 chosen); Sexy Otonajan are Miki Fujimoto and two Hello! Project kids; Puripuri Pink are Yuko NakazawaKaori IidaKei Yasuda and Atsuko Inaba.

Upon the release of the single, it was speculated that Sexy Otonajan actually were supposed to be 4 members too, like the other groups. Someone thought maybe Mari Yaguchi was the girl, as she had suddenly resigned due to paparazzi images of her and another man (idols aren’t supposed to date).

The single sold a total of 34.587 copies, ranking at #6 on the Oricon music charts.

Possible reasons for the groups’ names:

Puripuri Pink プリプリピンク

Puri puri プリプリ= onomatopoeia for “elasticity”, “flexibility” (smooth and firm texture found in things like jello, boiled eggs, and baby’s skin). Puri プリ is also the shorter way of saying プリティー (=pretty). Pink ピンク= pink color. The members wear bright pink costumes. Pink is also street slang for “adult entertainment”. Members are much older than other units from Hello! Project, so maybe Tsunku wanted to imply the unit as “well-experienced entertainers that only grown-ups can appreciate and enjoy”. Also, the sound of “Pu” プ and “Pi” ピ are poppy and fun, making the unit’s name catchy.

Elegies エレジーズ

The name comes from the word “elegy”, a type of poetry. The main verse of the song, “Inshouha Renoir No Youni” (印象派 ルノアールのように), consists of a series of Japanese Shiritori rhyme. For example…

KISS (Kisu) –> キスはこれKARA (Kisu Wa Kore Kara) –> 殼を破RUNO (Kara O Yabu Runo) –> ルノアールのように (Runo Aru No You Ni)

The shuffle unit ‘Elegies’ was Tsunku’s way of trying out his new word-play/trendy poetry style of lyrics.

Sexy Otona Jan セクシーオトナジャン

“Jan” is a slang term used at the end of an adjective or noun to make it sound more cool and casual. The selected members are quite young, but they possess the most matured images among “Hello!Project Kids” according to Tsunku. Tsunku probably thought the fans would casually exclaim, “Sexy Otona-jan!” (Wow, these girls are just like sexy grown-ups! Way to go!) when they see the members perform in this new shuffle unit.

オンナ、哀しい、オトナ (Onna, Kanashii, Otona)

Lyrics: Yoshiko Miura | Music: Tsunku | Arrangement: Yuichi Takahashi

Tsunku sings the chorus to this track.

In 2012 this song was used in the Hollywood movie «Wolverine», and in 2014 it was featured on the compilation album H!P no Zenkyoku Karaatsumechaimashita! Vol. 5.

From Tsunku’s blog:

This unit has the best potential of all, in my opinion. The leading member is Miki Fujimoto, and I added 2 girls who possess the most matured images among “Hello!Project Kids”. My dream finally came true for the new unit with sex appeal, and I named the unit as “Sexy Otona Jan”. I personally want this unit to succeed for a long time, but it’s just my selfish opinion. Lol. The song is ‘bossa-nova’ style, which reminds you of the romantic summer nights that grown-ups would enjoy by the beach. Please indulge yourself in this atmosphere. Special thanks to Yoshiko Miura who provided the lyrics for this song.

印象派 ルノアールのように (Inshouha Renoir no You ni)

Lyrics & Music: Tsunku Arrangement: Hideyuki Daichi Suzuki

From Tsunku’s blog:
The song is especially unique because the lyrics contain a fair amount of rhymes and word-plays. The melodies are up-tempo. The main chorus is based on Shiritori, which creates a continuous flow to the sound and accelerates the speed of the song a little bit more!

人知れず 胸を奏でる 夜の秋 (Hitoshirezu Mune wo Kanaderu Yoru no Aki)

Lyrics & Music: Tsunku Arrangement: Yasuaki Maejima

Atsuko Inaba and Tsunku sing the chorus to this track.

From Tsunku’s blog:

I wanted to create a unit that consists of the original members of Morning Musume and Taiyo To Ciscomoon. “Puri Puri Pink” is a shuffle unit which consists of the first generation of Hello!Project. I created a song with a mellow groove because I wanted to accentuate gentleness of the unison vocal and express the calm unity as a group with matured members.
